Renouncing British Citizenship

Renouncing British citizenship is a serious decision that takes careful consideration. This section explains how a British citizen can renounce, or give up, their British citizenship or passport and the times at which it is possible to do so. The section applies to people who have British citizenship, British overseas citizenship, British subject status or British national overseas status.

You may renounce British citizenship if the following applies:

  1. You already have a citizenship or passport for another country OR
  2. You are going to get citizenship for another country after you have given up your British passport.

In addition to this, the following applies:

  1. You must be aged 18 or under, unless you are married
  2. You must be sound of mind
