Supermarket Chains in Sydney
There are four major supermarkets in Sydney which can be found in most shopping centres and suburbs. These are Coles, Woolworths, IGA and Aldi.Coles and Woolworths are the most common and are priced and stocked much the same as each other. They have a wide range of foods and brands. It is recommended to buy fresh produce from elsewhere, like at a greengrocers, as the fruit and vegetables stocked in Coles and Woolworths, and in supermarkets in general, is often under par in comparison. That said, Coles and Woolworths offer convenience because they are never located too far, they are open most public holidays, and they open early and close late. Their prices are reasonable.
Aldi is the most price competitive of the top four supermarkets, selling their goods at a considerably lower price. Opening hours vary from store to store. Generally, however, they close earlier than Coles or Woolworths. In addition, Aldi’s range is smaller. For example, they may sell two different brands of tinned tuna compared to the four or five offered in Coles and Woolworths.
Aldi is a relatively new supermarket chain in Australia, entering the market in 2001. So, at the time of this edition they have fewer stores than the other three major supermarkets. Nevertheless, they are expanding so expect to see more of these supermarkets opening up in the future.
IGA is not a chain supermarket like the other three but is rather an alliance operating under the IGA name between retailers, wholesalers and manufacturers to compete with the chain supermarkets. IGA stores range in size, stock and hours of operation. They do not stock the range of the other supermarkets and you would be more likely to find these as smaller supermarkets in the suburbs.
