Sport Events in Delhi

Delhi is a city that offers ample opportunity for playing and watching sports. Delhi has some of the best sporting infrastructure —Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Indra Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Ambedkar Stadium— that India has to offer, most of it built for the Asian Games in 1982. Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was the main stadium used when Delhi hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010.However, one spectator sport that dominates Delhi and most of India is cricket. Although international matches rarely take place in the city, you can keep tabs on the regional matches that do—both the game and the spectators are entertaining. Matches take place at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in South Delhi or Ferozshah Stadium on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg [Phone 2335-8236]. Delhi’s home team is the Delhi Daredevils.

Other spectator sports with a reasonable following include tennis and polo. Golf tournaments, polo matches and car rallies with corporate sponsorships are marked by celebrity presence. The city also hosts regular tournaments of badminton, hockey, football, snooker, soccer (at National Stadium, Rajpath) and golf. The Monday horse races at the course on Kamal Ataturk Marg are also popular.

Winter (October-April) is the preferred season for sports events because of the favourable temperature. The local newspapers publish the list of the sporting events that take place across the city every day. Tickets for most events are available in advance and a list of upcoming events as well as the venues where they are available are advertised almost exclusively in the newspapers.

Tickets for many major sporting events can be purchased at the door or online at http://www.kyazoonga.com/.
