Newspapers

Don’t bother trying to find a place to live through the Vietnam News, the communist party’s print media organ and the only local daily in Hanoi. Real estate listings are almost exclusively on-line, so contain your search to the internet and a couple of good housing agents.

Websites

The New Hanoian is a local Craigslist-style on-line community website in English, French, Vietnamese and Chinese. There’s a high volume of listings on their real estate page, with lots of daily turnover–this is the place to start to see what’s available at what price range:

Craigslist doesn’t get nearly the traffic of its local counterpart, The New Hanoian, but it does have real estate listings aimed at English-speaking expats:

Real estate agents

A real estate agent will get a month or two of rent from the landlord as a commission for his or her services–there’s no obligation or fee for you as a house-hunter. High-end agents will pick you up at your hotel or temporary residence, and most often their service is impeccable–otherwise, try another one. Most agents represent a broad range of properties across the city, and can be integral to helping you get oriented in the the jumbled chaos that Hanoi may be until you get settled in.
