If you’re coming to Vietnam to have a look around, you can apply for a 1-month tourist visa or a 3-month business visa, either at a consulate or online. These visas take about a week, and can be procured in person or by mail from a Vietnamese embassy, or online through an agency.
The process takes about a week, but apply two weeks in advance to be safe. The type of visa can NOT be changed in-country. Most expats fly to Bangkok for a day or two if they need to change a visa.
