Supermarkets in Hanoi are a good source of dried and canned goods, condiments, sauces and oils, and in addition they sell pots and pans, electrical appliances, cosmetics, and a selection of beers, wines and liquors. They stock fresh fruits and vegetables as well, though the selection and quality is far inferior to what is available in local open-air markets. The staff speak at least rudimentary English, and prices are marked clearly, which is not always true for local shops.

Most supermarkets in Hanoi are open from early morning till 9 pm.

“Big C” is a vast, warehouse-like hypermarket that appears to have simply everything. It’s located in the south-west part of the city at 222 Tran Duy Hung.

“Citimart” is an upscale supermarket with a wide variety of imported meats and frozen foods, plus many western cheeses and wines. One location each in Hanoi Towers Shopping Center and Vincom City Towers, both near the center of town. Tel: 043 934 2888 (Vincom), 0439342999 (Hanoi Towers)

“Fivimart” has a good selection of local and imported foods, with a dozen locations throughout the city, including two in West Lake. Website: http://www.fivimart.com.vn
