Canada to Open its Doors to Higher Numbers of Residents and Expats in 2013

The government of Canada disclosed plans this week that they intend to admit between 240,000 and 265,000 new residents in 2013 and increase the number of federal skilled workers.

The figure, which was released in the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC)’s 2012 Annual Report to Parliament on Immigration, will represent the highest sustained level of immigration in Canada’s history. Deepak Kohli, President of Transcend Consultants, a Canadian Immigration Consultant commented on the figure in a press release, stating:
“Canada has welcomed 240,000 to 265,000 new immigrants for the past 6 years, with major focus on the economic class, comprising skilled worker, business immigrants and provincial nominees.”

Transcend consultants also revealed that the CIC also plan to increase the number of Canada Experience Class (CEC) admissions, from the current number of 6,500 to 10,000 in 2013.

“The CEC was created in 2008, to facilitate the transition from temporary to permanent residence for international students and temporary foreign workers, already in Canada.

“A recent change in the CEC criteria includes reducing the work experience eligibility period to 1 year, from 2 years for international graduates. This is expected to help these students in immigrating to Canada, even with a 1 year study program,” explained Deepak.

There was also good news for expatriates who wish to relocate to Canada on a temporary basis. In addition to increasing the CEC admissions, the CIC also plans to admit between 53,500 and 55,300 Federal Skilled Workers, including their spouses and dependents. “The CIC intends to lift the current pause on FSW applications in 2013, when the new selection criteria are expected to take effect,” said Deepak.
