Asia is Great for Your Expat Career but Europe is the Place to Retire

A new survey has indicated that expatriates who wish to further their career head to the East, while those looking for retirement favor Europe.

According to the latest Expat Explorer survey from HSBC, Asia is the top destination for professionals who move abroad for career advancement. In research involving 5339 expats living throughout the world, Asia was revealed to be the best place in the world for expatriates to improve their career prospects: “Asia is increasingly coming to the fore as a top destination for both financial opportunities and life experiences,” said Dean Blackburn, the head of HSBC Expat.

The results of the survey also confirm that Asian countries continue to lure western expatriates in order to benefit from their experience, skills and brainpower.

Meanwhile, Europe is the top destination for expats who are looking to retire in the Sun, with France and Spain ranking highly in the list of places that represent the ideal retirement destinations, despite the fact that expats in Spain continue to feel the ill effects of the economic downturn. While Germany bucks the trend and remains a popular destination for expats who are looking to further their careers, especially those who are based in the technology sector, it remains much less attractive as a retirement destination than it’s European neighbors.

For overall expat experience and lifestyle, the Cayman Islands was ranked as the best place in the world to live, followed by Thailand, Spain, Singapore, Malaysia, Mexico and Switzerland. Japan, Vietnam, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and India were named as the worse. The destinations that offered the best economic conditions were Singapore, followed by Bermuda, Thailand, Hong Kong, the Cayman Islands, Mexico and China. While those with the worse were France, Kuwait, Britain, and Italy.

The research was completed as part of the fifth Expat Explorer survey, which was carried out by YouGov.
