Visa Requirements

UK citizens are accustomed to relying on the National Health Service (NHS) when in need of medical attention. This service is provided free of charge to all UK residents, with citizens typically only having to pay prescription charges for any necessary medication. However, there are subsidized discounts on these charges, though not always.

The NHS is often taken for granted by many UK citizens, and the concept of paying medical bills seems completely alien to them. With this in mind, it’s important to remember that when relocating to another country, medical assistance may not be free. Before moving abroad, make sure you have an adequate health insurance policy in place. Check which medical conditions are covered and which are not. Avoid purchasing low-cost policies that might offer insufficient coverage for you and your family. Often, cheaper policies provide less protection than other more comprehensive options. In order for a UK citizen to receive medical treatment in another EU member state, it is necessary to obtain a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or use the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) if already issued. Since Brexit, UK citizens can apply for a GHIC instead of an EHIC for medical coverage while traveling in the EU.

You can apply for the GHIC online at the official UK government website: https://www.gov.uk/global-health-insurance-card

If you are still in possession of an EHIC issued before Brexit, it remains valid until its expiry date for travel within the EU.

If you have retired and are moving to another EU country, you will need to consider the Form S1 (formerly Form E121), which provides access to state healthcare in the EU. This can be arranged through the UK government or your pension provider. For more information, visit the official UK government page or check with pension support services.
