The Central Business District in Melbourne is full of large department stores, pedestrianised shopping strips, impressive shopping malls, major chain stores, popular fashion boutiques, street cafés and friendly restaurants. Melbourne’s inner-city shopping strips are more relaxed and include areas such as Collins Street in central Melbourne, High Street in Armadale, Toorak Road and Chapel Street in Melbourne’s South Yarra district, and Carlton’s Lygon Street. Some of Melbourne’s most historic areas feature shops selling Aboriginal art, extravagant shoes, high fashion, jewellery and weekly markets.

One of the largest concentrations of designer clothing and jewellery shops in Melbourne is in the city’s “Paris end”. This precinct, situated on Collins Street, Swanston Street and Spring Street, is where you will find an enormous range of the latest high-street fashions and luxurious boutiques.

Nearby is Bourke Street, home to the city’s busy pedestrian shopping district and a number of impressive, uniquely Melbournian department stores, such as Myer and David Jones.

Vintage clothes and seconds can be found in Melbourne’s Greville Street in the Prahran district, between Punt road and Church Street in the Richmond area of Melbourne, and on Barkly Street in St. Kilda.

See our section “Clothing Stores” for a more detailed look at these areas.
