Internet Service Guide Delhi

Internet at Home

Choosing an Internet Service Provider (ISP) can be tricky as there are a number of Internet access plans around with various features. Before you make a decision about an ISP, it is worth spending some time to think about the Internet access plans that best suit you. Most of these services are quick to initiate if you have the basic infrastructure in place. Most providers will be happy to set up the connection at your place. You will not be expected to install the Internet yourself.

While you can get dial-up internet still in India, it’s very slow and there’s no real reason to go down this path. Broadband is a better option and usually costs anywhere from around Rs 500/month including taxes (for a download speed of 512 kbps) to about Rs. 1500 (for downloads at 2mbps). Most broadband connections come with a wireless router, and the rates are the same whether you use a cable or Wi-Fi.

Ask if the ISP uses a shared network or provides you with your own line, as a shared network from the server connections are dangerous and can make your computer extremely prone to virus attacks.

Setting up a connection

To set up an account, you will need to go to your local provider’s office with the following documents: Identity proof, Residence proof (normally a lease agreement will suffice), and PAN Card or Passport. You’ll also require two passport-size photographs. Simply fill in an application, submit your documents, and within 48 hours someone should come round to set up your internet connection. The following are the major providers in Delhi:

Internet Cafes

You can find an internet café in almost every corner of Delhi. The rates vary between Rs 30 and Rs 60 per hour. Generally, the internet cafes also provide printing, scanning and video conferencing facilities.
