Expat Safety Guide Berlin

Like most metropolises, Berlin experiences its fair share of criminal activity, but by western standards – it is an exceptionally safe city. Traveling on public transportation or walking alone is generally safe, no matter what time of day or night – even as a single female. In fact, women are generally left alone.

Of course, there are areas to be wary of, especially at night. Places like Neukölln, Wedding and the outer eastern working-class suburbs should be avoided, particularly if you are gay or look non-German. However, despite Berlin’s history of punks and squats, in comparison to London or New York-Berlin is very tame.

If you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation – don’t be shy in asking for help. Most Berliners will be happy to lend a hand.
